Front-end and back-end are two distinct parts of the software development that play a crucial part in web development. The frontend is what you actually see and interact with and backend is how all of it works. Though their functionality is distinct, they are the two sides of the same coin. The websites would function smoothly only if the backend and frontend technologies function as a cohesive unit. Let us look at these two aspects of a website
Front-end technologies
Front-end technologies include everything that the user can see, touch and experience. It would include the graphical user interface with its flashy buttons, images, navigation menus, etc. Frontend technologies would require the developer to have the capability to define excellent UX and create responsive web design using their expertise in front-end coding and development with basic front-end technologies like HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3, and the front-end frameworks and third-party libraries like AngularJS, JQuery, REACT, etc.
Thus the role of the frontend developer is to create an environment that the viewer finds appealing and is user-friendly at the same time.
Back-end technologies
Back end refers to the server-side of the website which you cannot see and interact with. It actually is responsible for the website working smoothly. It works on the server-side but communicates with the frontend to ensure everything works fine.
Back-end technologies require the full-stack developer to know programming languages like C#, JAVA, J2EE, PHP, etc. along with a good grasp over logical processes, database-related processes, validation of users and server configuration. Knowledge about JavaScript is a must. They should be familiar with its features, new libraries, and frameworks, i.e. Angular or React. Full-stack developers must have experience of working with Git to keep track of all the changes made in the codebase. Backend developers should have in-depth knowledge of developing a complex web application by structuring the code, separating the file and storing the files and structuring the data in databases to perform some computational tasks. Thus, both are crucial to web development, though their roles, responsibilities are different. The Backend developers figure out the functional logic and implementing the algorithms to ensure the functions of the website effectively and frontend is all about the visual aspects of the website.
